About VDI

The idea for this business came to me one day when I was driving down from the Bay Area to Los Angeles and came upon a folding chair in the middle of the highway.  Because I had been checking my mirrors regularly, I knew I had room to go around it.  After I got safely around the hazard, I asked myself two questions:

  1. Could my 16 year old son - who's about to get his driving permit - do what I just did?
  2. If he could, where in the world would he have learned how?  Certainly not from me…

So we started looking around for a way teens could practice survival skills.  Some kind of interactive driving simulator made sense; one where we could place students in hazardous conditions, in all kinds of weather, without anybody getting hurt.  There wasn't much on the market to choose from until we found our now parent company Raydon.  They had been designing and building simulators since 1987 mainly for the military.

Raydon partnered with the National Safety Council to develop defensive driving courseware and designed a highly sophisticated virtual trainer.  They also had a 4-hour course called STREETReady that was designed specifically for novice drivers.  This was just what we were looking for.  A few months later we formed a wholly owned subsidiary of Raydon Corporation called Virtual Driver Interactive and went to market.

In closing, we were concerned parents before we got into this business looking for something that was hard to find — affordable collision avoidance training taught in a simulator.  We finally found what we were looking for.  Now we hope you find us.

Sincerely,

Bob Davis
